Ocean

The ocean covers 2/3rds of the surface of the earth, it is water – yet it is the earth’s most vast desert… There is water, but you cannot drink it – there is food growing, but almost all of it is deep beyond your reach.  There is no shade and during the doldrums of the air above there are no cooling breezes.  The ocean is unforgiving – you cannot tread water or float forever and should you find yourself in its middle, you will never be able to swim to shore.

And yet – without the ocean, there would be no rains, there would be no great earth cleansing storms. There would be no great filter for the toxicity of the firmament.

When you try to grab the ocean it slips through your fingers but, is you stick your hand into it at any point, who is to say that you are not holding the entire ocean?
